Périclès — Wikipédia

Continuing with the documentary we had been watching in class, we were instructed today to watch 7 minutes of Pericles's plan for Athens during the Peloponnesian War, where they were to fight off Sparta's invasion. We were then told to write a paragraph (detailed, of course) in regard to Pericles' strategy during this fierce war. That paragraph is listed below.

While the Spartans set out to invade and destroy nearly all Athenian Farmland, it was Pericles' job to ensure his population not lose confidence in his "plan". Luckily, unlike the invading Spartans, the Athenians could rely on their shipment and trades to remain in power during this time of fierce destruction. What they didn't expect though, was that one of the trading ships carrying grain would one day carry a plague with it. This disease not only caused hell (and plenty of death) for the Athenians, but there was also no preparation for such an event in Pericles' plan. This plague would kill over 1/3 of the Athens population. As if things couldn't get worst, Pericles gets infected with the disease, six months later in 429 B.C., he dies to this terrible disease. Towards the end of his life and especially after his death, it became very apparent to the Athenian population how much they had relied on this one man. Personally, if these Athenians looked to Pericles with such faith, it must've have been on par with losing a family member when he passed to such a disease that had already crippled the population count of Athens. Further, the Elites in which surrounded Pericles constantly began to notice how little they did under his rule and how things would change. Rather, they began to strive for power in which Pericles had possessed. What ended up being the Pericles plan, the use of vessels in all aspects of life (battle and trade), turned out to be the downfall of Pericles and his astonishing empire. It is especially important to realize that since the Athenians had specialized in the use of sails and the sea, they were able to easily utilize these advantages compared to the Spartans (who still had some skill with the waters.)

With that said, I conclude my March 18th Cyber Day Post, Till next time!
